Creative Android Complaint

Creative rises from the dead to try and destroy Android

Do you remember Creative? In the early 2000s, the company had a brief period of being cool, as its Zen MP3 players were the anti-establishment alternative to the iPod. These days, the Singapore-based company mostly makes gaming headsets and computer speakers — nothing to do with smartphones, in other words. But thanks to a complaint filed against every big Android phone manufacturer, Creative has quietly declared war on Android.
The complaint is filed against a who’s-who of Android smartphones: Samsung, LG, HTC, BlackBerry, Sony, ZTE, Lenovo and Motorola. The issue at hand is music players: all the phones have ’em, and Creative has a patent it thinks is being infringed on. Specifically, all the phones are capable of “playing stored media files selected by a user from a hierarchical display.”

iPhone vs. Android: Which phones are more likely to fail?

Android Vs iPhone Stability

For the second consecutive quarter, a study has determined that Apple’s line of iPhones is far more stable than Androidhandsets. Mobile diagnostics company Blancco Technology Group on Wednesday released the results of an updated study that looks to determine which phones stand up best to the test of time and continue to function without failing.

As was the case with the firm’s last study, Blancco found a huge disparity in reliability when comparing the two platforms.MORE →

Images of all the new emoji that might be coming soon to your smartphone

Typically when a new emoji proposal comes over the wire, it’s not worth diving too deep into because there are no guarantees that the Unicode Consortium will approve any or all of the new suggestions. In the case of a new proposal making waves on Wednesday morning, however, an exception should be made for two reasons:
First, the new emoji set aims to empower women by offering two sets of the same emoji, one male and one female. Second, they’ll almost certainly be approved by the consortium because one of the people behind the new proposal is Google’s Mark Davis, who just so happens to be the president of the Unicode Consortium.MORE →

Google I/O

Google I/O 2016 preview: All the biggest announcements you can expect next week

Every year during the spring and summer months, Android and Apple users alike are given a glimpse into the future of their respective mobile operating systems. Apple of course has WWDC which is slated to take place in June and Google will kick things off one month earlier when its annual I/O developers conference kicks off next week on May 18.
What makes Google’s I/O conference arguably more interesting and exciting than WWDC is that there’s a whole lot more to cover. While Apple will predictably cover the future of iOS and OS X, Google, as it’s prone to do, will cover an incredible array of products and technologies, hardly a surprise given how many different pots Google has its hands in these days. Indeed, Google’s broadening interest in all facets of technology – and even science – is what prompted the company to rename and restructure itself under the Alphabet umbrella.
All that said, we are eagerly anticipating Google to make a number of interesting announcements that extend far beyond the company’s upcoming Android N update. From a rumored VR headset to more information regarding a Project Tango smartphone, the collective eyes of the tech world will understandably be laser focused on all things Google I/O next week.

Google Translate App Android

Google Translate for Android just got way more useful

There’s an update out for Google’s Android Translate app that you should definitely go download. Rather than just working in the dedicated app, Translate for Android now works its magic system-wide, letting you translate text from WhatsApp, emails, or any app you can think of.
Tap to Translate is a new feature that lets you translate text from any app system-wide, without needing to flip back into the Translate app. Simply copy text from any app, and a little Translate button will appear. Tap it, and you’ll get a translation of whatever you highlighted. It works with 103 different languages, and will even function offline. Best of all, since the update is to the Translate app, and not part of Android, you don’t have to wait for your device manufacturer to include the update. Provided that you’re running Android 4.2 or up, you just need to nab the latest update from the Play Store.

Koushik Dutta pulls Vysor due to patent licensing demand from MPEG LA (Update: it’s back!)

vysor-desktop
Update (May 16): After just two days of being offline, Koushik Dutta has figured out a way to bring Vysor back to the Chrome Web Store.
The developer says almost 20,000 people use Vysor each day, half of which use it over 4 hours per day. Obviously this meant getting the app back online was a priority. It is changing a bit, though, so here’s what you need to know going forward.
Vysor is now a subscription app. If you don’t want to pay, you’ll still have the ability to mirror and control your Android device from Chrome, and also take screenshots. A Vysor Pro subscription, which costs $1.99/month or $9.99/year, gets you high quality mirroring, fullscreen mode, Vysor Share, the ability to drag and drop files, and access to all future features. The dev also says he removed the infringing h264 decoder and switched to Chrome’s Pepper VideoDecoder introduced in Chrome 48.
Interested in trying out Vysor for yourself? Head to the link below to get started.

Samsung updates the Galaxy S7’s Always on Display to allow for time settings

0

This year, both Samsung and LG sought to bring the marvelous magic of Always on Display functionality to their flagship handsets. The idea behind the thinking is that users will be able to check the time and notifications simply by looking at their phone’s display even when it’s turned off. Whereas LG’s implementation allows a bit more usability in terms of what kinds of notifications are displayed, Samsung’s can at least take advantage of AMOLED display technology, which only uses power to display non-black pixels.

New version of the Nexus 6P hits Geekbench with Snapdragon 820, 4GB RAM and Android N

0

The Google Nexus 6P was one of last year's great smartphone success stories. Built by Huawei, the device packs a strong array of tech. specs including the Snapdragon 810 SoC and 3 GB of RAM, capped by a superb rear-facing camera. Even though it was only rolled out in November, it doesn't take long for modern-day smartphones to begin feeling their age, and already, the 6P has a slew of strong, Snapdragon 820-powered rivals for company. In a real turn up for the books, though, a seemingly new variant of the Nexus 6P has been caught on Geekbench with the Snapdragon 820, 4 GB of RAM and Android N in tow.

Though it seems that HTC may take the reigns for this year's fleet of Nexus devices, this doesn't necessarily mean that the Nexus 6P won't get a successor, or at least a refresh. With HTC said to have penned a long-term deal to oversee the creation of Nexus devices over the next few years, it was looking likeHuawei's recent '7P' trademark would be the only hope of the Nexus 6P's continuation. But with these specs having checked in through Geekbench, we may not have seen the last of the handset's legacy...Read more

New Galaxy S7 family member uncovered? Model could be a possible Galaxy S7 Sport
Every time a new Samsung Galaxy flagship rolls around, we find ourselves wondering about what sort of related handsets Samsung might also release. This year we started things off with a pair of twins: the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. But would those two soon be joined by other models? Maybe a Galaxy S7 mini? What about a Galaxy S7 Active? There's been a good amount of evidence pointing to that latter phone recently, from Samsung itself admitting the model's existence, to leaked pics of actual hardware. Today we're checking out what could be another member of the Galaxy S7 family, and possibly a phone closely related to the GS7 Active.

We're talking about Samsung's model SM-G880, as revealed a few days back by an Indian import database as a handset currently under development.

Remember, the Galaxy S7 itself is model G930, the Galaxy S7 edge is model G935, and it's looking like the Galaxy S7 Active will emerge as model G891.

So what does that make this new phone? Well, one theory suggests that we could be looking at the next generation of the old Galaxy S5 Sport, which itself was Samsung model G870; if AT&T gets the GS7 Active, as it's looking it will, could Sprint end up with this G880 as a Galaxy S7 Sport?.. Sony intros the Xperia XA Ultra: a large Android Marshmallow phone with a 16 MP selfie camera

0

Sony today unveiled a brand new Android smartphone: the Xperia XA Ultra, which becomes the fourth handset in the company's Xperia X series (also including the Xperia XXperia X Performance, and Xperia XA).

The Xperia XA Ultra is the same device that we previously saw presented (unofficially) as theXperia C6 Ultra. As its name suggests, the XA Ultra is a larger version of the Xperia XA, having a relatively similar design - including an edge-to-edge display. Of course, since this is a bigger device, the display is also bigger than on the regular XA: it's a 6-inch panel with 1080 x 1920 pixels.

One of the highlight features of the Sony Xperia XA Ultra is its 16 MP front-facing camera with LED flash and OIS (optical image stabilization), which should let you take high quality selfies. The handset also packs a 21.5 MP rear camera, but it seems that this one doesn't have OIS - thus, the recently released HTC 10 may remain the only smartphone to offer OIS on both the front, and rear cameras... Android's latest sugary flavor isn't a huge change from Lollipop, but it's a welcome upgrade.
Google began rolling out updates to Android 6.0 Marshmallow a month ago, but chances are you don't have it on your device yet, unless you have a Nexus or just purchased a brand-new Android phone, like the HTC One A9.

I received the upgrade for my Nexus 7 tablet. But usually the hold up with Android updates can be attributed to the messy patchwork of manufacturers and carriers making sure their particularly noxious stew of overlays and bloatware work well together.
